YouTube Thumbnail Size

1280 × 720 is still a 16:9 HD image. It is not an invalid size simply because the recommendation is higher. If your current design is HD, keep the original source file and judge whether you actually have higher-resolution artwork to export.

Our packaging editor currently exports at 1280 × 720. The separate free resizer offers both HD and 4K canvases. Upscaling an HD export does not add real photographic or text detail. For the cleanest larger output, start with a larger original.

The image looks stretched. Changing width and height independently changes proportions. Choose a 16:9 crop, or preserve the original and add borders. If an important label is cut off, adjust crop position instead of squeezing the image.

The upload is too large. Keep the pixel dimensions you need, then compress the file. JPEG works well for many photographic compositions. Check text edges after compression; a smaller file is not useful if viewers cannot read it.

The thumbnail is sharp but hard to read. That is often a composition problem. A 4K image still becomes small in a feed. Try the feed-size thumbnail preview and simplify anything that disappears.

1. Identify the destination: a regular video, a Short or a podcast playlist cover. A podcast episode video and its playlist cover are different assets.
2. Keep an editable original. Resize a copy so you can recover text or imagery lost to a crop.
3. Choose dimensions that suit the source, preserve the intended aspect ratio, and set a file target for your upload device.
4. Open the exported file. Inspect the focal subject, small lettering and crop. Then preview it alongside the intended title.
